Highlights of the Climate Action Map
Why was the map created?
The communities of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR), located in Canada’s Western Arctic, are experiencing the effects of rapid and intense climate change. Both Inuvialuit Traditional Knowledge holders and climate scientists have found that the region is shifting towards a warmer and wetter climate, and the consequences of this shift are some of the least understood and most damaging.
To improve communication of the actions that are being implemented to address the impacts of climate change in the region, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) developed the ISR Climate Change Action Map.
The intent of the Action Map is to communicate to Inuvialuit beneficiaries the purpose, results, and opportunities associated with climate change projects happening near their communities.

Who
The ISR Climate Change Action Map was developed by IRC with technical assistance from third-party contractors and financial support from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
What
Over 100 climate change projects are showcased in the Action Map. These projects are diverse both in terms of their type (scientific research, front line projects and community engagement) and subject matter (food and wellness, safety, housing and infrastructure, education and awareness, ecosystem health and diversity and energy).
When
The Action Map and its supporting assets were developed between May 2020 and March 2021. IRC will ensure the map stays up-to-date and operational beyond the development period.
Where
The Action Map features climate change projects from across the ISR, including initiatives in and near the six Inuvialuit communities of Aklavik, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tuktoyaktuk and Ulukhaktok. Projects involving ISR waterways and the Beaufort Sea are also well represented.
Why
One of the main objectives of the Action Map is to achieve greater community awareness of and engagement in climate change-related activities in the ISR. It also aims to encourage more collaboration between Inuvialuit beneficiaries, researchers and project teams.
How (To Get Involved)
For Inuvialuit beneficiaries, participation opportunities in climate change research projects can be found in the Action Map where available. Meanwhile, the project contribution form is available for researchers and project teams looking to add their relevant project to the Action Map.
Climate Action in the ISR
In 2020, IRC developed the ISR Climate Change Strategy, which describes a broad range of climate change impacts the region is facing and sets forth both adaptation and mitigation measures across six thematic areas:
- Food and Wellness
- Safety
- Housing and Infrastructure
- Education and Awareness
- Ecosystem Health and Diversity
- Energy
The Action Map and StoryMap are complementary to the strategy and communicate significant work and progress on the above thematic areas.
